The beat was hardly fished in the first week of September, as water levels dropped and sunny and warmer weather prevailed. However, a brief spate on 8/9 September changed things, and 8 salmon were caught in the second week, as the river dropped steadily all week. Again, fishing effort was light, with only 1 or 2 rods fishing most days. Smithston members, guests, and let rods shared the fish caught, which ranged from 4-12lb. The river seems well stocked, and some fish are fairly fresh too.
Our total for the season now equals that for the whole of last year, with almost 7 weeks of the season to go. With a small rise yesterday, the beginning of the coming week looks promising.
